Ellen Starr BRINTON born 1886 West Chester PA (d. 1954). Quaker internationalist and feminist; early leader of WILPF; founder of Swarthmore Peace Collection 1935.

Marcelle CAPY (Marques) born Cherbourg 1891 (d. 1962). French journalist and public speaker, founder (1916) of anti-war feminist weekly La Vague (The Wave: a journal of combat, feminist, and socialist); President of International League of Fighters for Peace.

PEACEFUL EVENTS BY WOMEN ON THIS DAY:

1965: Alice Herz, immolated herself, age 79, in protest against Vietnam War. Quote: “I choose the illuminating death of a Buddhist to protest against a great country trying to wipe out a small country with no reason.”

1983: Comiso Women Protesters released and deported by Italian government.

2003: Rachel Corrie killed by Israeli bulldozer at Rafah, Gaza. Quote: I really can’t believe that something like this can happen in the world without a bigger outcry about it. It really hurts me…to witness how awful we can allow the world to be.” (e-mail 27 Feb.).
